Revisiting Lightning Activity and Parameterization Using Geostationary Satellite Observations

چکیده
The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) on the Operational Environmental Satellite 16 (GOES-16) detects total lightning continuously, with a high spatial resolution and detection efficiency. Coincident data from GLM Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) are used to explore correlation between cloud top properties flash activity across continental United States (CONUS) sector May September 2020. A large number of collocated infrared (IR) brightness temperature (TBB), height (CTH) provides robust statistics. Overall, likelihood occurrence density is higher if TBB colder than 225 K. CTH observed be correlated larger rate, smaller size, stronger updraft, optical energy. Furthermore, updraft velocity (w) estimated based decreasing rate TBB, but it convective core. As result, relationship investigated independently w over continental, oceanic coastal regimes in tropics mid-latitudes. When 12 km, rates 38% those both lightning. In addition, should noted that more studies necessary examine why low clouds (CTH < 8 km) has land coast. Finally, exponents derived power four, which underestimated due efficiency difference IR 20 dBZ CTH. results combining ABI products suggest merging multiple satellite datasets could benefit parameterization studies, although parallax corrections considered.

Evaluation of a GCM cirrus parameterization using satellite observations
This study applies a simple yet effective methodology to validate a general circulation model parameterization of cirrus ice water path. The methodology combines large-scale dynamic and thermodynamic fields from operational analyses with prescribed occurrence of cirrus clouds from satellite observations to simulate a global distribution of ice water path. The predicted cloud properties are then...
متن کاملAn Analysis of the Lightning Jump Algorithm Using Geostationary Lightning Mapper Flashes
This project aims to implement the two-sigma lightning jump algorithm (LJA) developed using Lightning Mapping Arrays (LMAs), with GOES-16 Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) flashes, evaluate its performance, and identify any needed adjustments to the algorithm to optimize operational skill. The GLM is projected to have lower detection efficiency (DE) (7090 percent) than operational LMAs (95-9...
متن کاملEstimates of lightning NOx production from GOME satellite observations
Tropospheric NO2 column retrievals from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) satellite spectrometer are used to quantify the source strength and 3-D distribution of lightning produced nitrogen oxides (NOx=NO+NO2). A sharp increase of NO2 is observed at convective cloud tops with increasing cloud top height, consistent with a power-law behaviour with power 5±2. Convective production of ...
